About
CONGRESS THEME
The theme for the 31st South African National
Blood Transfusion Congress 2009 is “Sustainable Safe Blood:
Mastering Change”, a most relevant and fascinating subject
in light of new developments which are compounding the
already substantial difficulties in collecting sufficient
suitable blood and ensuring the ethical, financially
sustainable and optimum therapeutic use of this blood.
This theme was carefully selected, as it reflects the
current state of blood transfusions in South and southern
Africa. In addition, it embodies the continuous
efforts made to improve where systems require the deployment
of resources, and to maintain conditions where systems are
amongst the best in the world.
The main focus will be on the continuous efforts being made
within the industry to maintain a safe and sustainable blood
supply. Well-planned sessions will highlight the challenges
and success stories related to the procurement of blood,
testing strategies and appropriate utilisation of this
precious resource.
